Interoperable digital currency systems could transform this process. Overseas workers and professionals may eventually transfer funds directly to India with lower costs, faster settlement and greater transparency, benefiting families, students, entrepreneurs and businesses operating across borders.

For the global Indian diaspora, digital currencies therefore represent more than technological innovation. They offer the possibility of a more efficient financial infrastructure connecting communities spread across different countries.

At the same time, important policy questions remain. Privacy, cybersecurity, financial surveillance and the future role of commercial banks continue to shape public debate. Europe, America and the Race for Monetary Sovereignty

While China has moved aggressively and India has focused on financial inclusion, Europe and North America have adopted a more cautious approach towards digital currencies.

The reason is straightforward. Advanced economies already possess sophisticated banking systems, highly developed payment networks and widespread access to digital financial services. Consumers across Europe and the United States routinely make instant electronic payments, reducing the urgency for immediate monetary transformation.

Nevertheless, caution does not imply inactivity.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has spent several years studying the feasibility of a Digital Euro, consulting banks, technology companies and policymakers on how sovereign digital money could strengthen Europe’s financial future. Beyond payment efficiency, the project reflects a broader strategic objective: preserving European monetary sovereignty in an increasingly digital economy.

European policymakers are particularly concerned about dependence on international payment providers and global technology companies. A Digital Euro would provide a sovereign payment alternative operating directly within European monetary institutions while reducing strategic dependence on foreign financial infrastructure.

Privacy remains central to Europe’s approach. European authorities have consistently argued that any Digital Euro must balance strong consumer privacy with legal obligations relating to financial crime, anti-money laundering measures and regulatory oversight.

The United States faces a different challenge.

The global dominance of the US dollar already provides Washington with significant influence over international trade, reserve currencies and financial sanctions. This reduces the immediate pressure to introduce a digital dollar while simultaneously creating an incentive to ensure technological innovation does not eventually weaken that position.

The Federal Reserve has therefore adopted a measured approach, studying how a digital dollar could affect financial stability, banking institutions and monetary policy before making long-term commitments.

Commercial banks have also expressed concerns. If citizens eventually hold digital money directly with central banks, deposits could gradually shift away from commercial banks, potentially changing how banks finance lending and investment activities. Policymakers therefore face the challenge of encouraging innovation without destabilising existing financial systems.

Meanwhile, the Bank of England, together with central banks in Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea, continues exploring digital currency projects through research and pilot programmes.

Despite different strategies, one conclusion is increasingly shared worldwide. Digital currencies are no longer viewed simply as payment technologies. They have become strategic national infrastructure, comparable to telecommunications, artificial intelligence and energy security.
