Port Blair Cellular Jail

It welcomes visitors today and offers a nighttime light and sound performance that tells the story of India’s struggle for independence. Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is when visitors are welcome.

Jail at Yerawada, Pune, Maharashtra
One of the biggest prisons in South Asia, Yerawada Jail, is important to Indian history. Constructed by the British Government in 1871, it served as a residence for notable advocates of freedom, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Tourists can see the Faasi yard, where death sentences were carried out, and tour historic group cells named for Gandhi and Tilak.

Jail  Tihar, New Delhi
The largest jail complex in India, Tihar Jail, places more of an emphasis on corrective measures to help ex-offenders reintegrate into society. In addition to its primary goal, the jail produces a range of commodities under the Tihar brand in an exclusively inmate-run prison business. Vocational activities like weaving, tailoring, carpentry, and more are available for visitors to observe.



Goa’s Aguada Jail
The jail held prominent freedom fighters like Ram Manohar and TB Cunha and contributed to the fight against Portuguese control in Goa. Its picturesque setting next to the Mandovi River and historical significance make it a fascinating place to visit.

Bangalore’s Sangareddy Prison
Hyderabad’s 2200-year-old colonial-era jail has been converted into a museum. Constructed in 1796, this prison-turned-museum offers a distinctive experience to guests as part of the ‘Feel the Jail’ campaign. It lets users experience a full day in jail, providing a window into the day-to-day activities of convicts in the colonial era.

Island of Viper, Andaman
Although not as well-known as Cellular Jail, Viper Island was important in the period leading up to independence. People who dared to criticise the ruling class were brought here to be tortured. Amidst verdant surroundings, the island retains its enigmatic aura despite being reduced to ruins.
