The BJP secured 240 seats in the Lok Sabha Elections, securing Modi’s third term as PM with the support of the NDA.
INDIA Bloc Makes Significant Gains in Uttar Pradesh, Securing 37 Seats Against the BJP
The final count for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections has concluded, with the Election Commission of India announcing the results for all constituencies.
The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emerged victorious in 240 out of 543 seats, while the Congress secured 99 seats. Despite the Lok Sabha having 543 members, the uncontested election of the BJP’s Surat candidate, Mukesh Dalal, led to the counting of 542 seats.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has secured a majority, will support Prime Minister Narendra Modi in leading the government for a third consecutive term. Despite falling short of the 272-majority mark, the BJP will rely on NDA allies to form the government. The election results did not deliver the overwhelming victory anticipated by the BJP-led NDA or predicted by the exit polls.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will attend the NDA meeting in Delhi today, with Kumar departing at 10:45 a.m. and Shinde at 11 a.m. The Narendra Modi-led government will hold a Cabinet meeting at 11:30 a.m. to dissolve the current government and form a new one.
In Delhi, the BJP won all seven Lok Sabha seats for the third consecutive time, defeating the AAP-Congress alliance. BJP candidates Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Praveen Khandelwal, Bansuri Swaraj, Harsh Malhotra, Manoj Tiwari, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, and Yogender Chandoliya won with significant margins.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP faced a substantial challenge from the INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party, which won 37 seats. This reduced the BJP’s count to 35 from 62 seats in 2019.
The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured 29 seats, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 22 seats, and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured 16 seats.
Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat for the second consecutive time with a margin of over 3.64 lakh votes against the CPI’s Annie Raja. Gandhi also won from Rae Bareli, but he has not yet decided which constituency he will represent in the Lok Sabha.
Prime Minister Modi remarked that the BJP-led NDA’s third successive government is a victory for the vision of “Viksit Bharat” and the strong faith of the people in India’s Constitution. He noted that this is the first time since 1962 that a government that has completed two full terms has won a third consecutive term.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, thanked the people of Wayanad and Rae Bareli for their support, stating that they have saved the Constitution and democracy in the country.
In a press conference, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated, “The election results announced today… I will say… this is the public’s result and the public’s and democracy’s victory. We had been saying that this battle is between the public and Modi.”
Rajesh Sharma, a shopkeeper from Varanasi, expressed his views: “The results are clear. People have once again shown their trust in Modi ji. We believe he will continue to work for the development of our nation and improve the lives of the common man.”
Ayesha Khan, a teacher from Lucknow, shared her concerns: “While the BJP has won, we hope they will address the issues faced by minorities and work towards an inclusive India. Our expectations are high for better communal harmony and economic opportunities.”
Harpreet Singh, a farmer from Punjab, remarked: “This election has been crucial for all of us. We look forward to seeing more support for farmers and improvements in agricultural policies. The government must focus on rural development and fair prices for our produce.”
Mary D’Souza, a social worker from Goa, stated: “The results reflect the people’s mandate. We expect the government to uphold secular values and ensure equal rights for all communities. There is a need for continued focus on education and healthcare.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the BJP headquarters, expressing gratitude to the people of India for their participation in the democratic process. He highlighted the BJP’s success in regions where the party had previously struggled, showcasing the growing reach and acceptance of their policies. In BJP-ruled states, Modi assured voters that the central government would continue to support their development and other key initiatives to propel India forward.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the Election Commission of India for successfully conducting the elections. He praised their efforts in managing such a large-scale event, with over 1 crore (10 million) workers in place, ensuring that the democratic process ran smoothly and efficiently.
