Ratan Tata: An Unparalleled Donor In The World
Ratan Tata generously donated Rs 950 million to IIT-B and $50 million to Harvard to fund research.
Ratan Naval Tata was a well-known philanthropist who gave money, endowments, fellowships, scholarships, and other forms of support to numerous Indian and foreign institutions.
Naval Ratan Tata Education Qualification: Ratan Tata was born in December 1937 and died on October 9 from age-related illnesses. The well-educated Indian businessman and philanthropist was the chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons from 1990 to 2012 and the interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017.
After completing his eighth grade education at the Campion School in Mumbai, Tata moved to the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, then to the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and finally to the Riverdale Country School in New York City, where he earned his diploma in 1955.
He continued his education in New York by enrolling at Cornell University, where he graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture.
University Endowments And Donations
In India, Tata was a well-known and renowned philanthropist. Tata gave Cornell $50 million in 2008, making him the university’s biggest foreign contributor ever. The university honoured Tata on social media, saying, “We will remember his legacy as one of India’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists and his tremendous support for scholarships, research, and technology innovation at Cornell.”
In order to provide better water for communities that face challenges, he also backed the University Of New South Wales Faculty Of Engineering’s development of capacitive deionisation.
In 2010, the Harvard Business School (HBS) built an executive centre dedicated to the school’s mid-career executive education program thanks to a $50 million donation from Tata Group enterprises and Tata charities.
In order to provide design and engineering principles that are appropriate for the needs of individuals and communities with limited resources, the Tata Group established the Tata Centre for Technology and Design (TCTD) and funded the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) a few years later in 2014. IIT Bombay received the highest donation in its history, ₹950 million, from the Tata Group.
In the same year, the Indian Institute of Science’s Centre for Neuroscience received a ₹750 million funding from Tata Trusts to investigate the causes behind Alzheimer’s disease and develop early detection and treatment techniques.
In 2018, he also constructed a Tata Hall at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), a cutting-edge biotechnology research centre that houses the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, which carries out genetics and disease control research.
In addition, the Tata Group established the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Tata Centre of Technology and Design with the goal of tackling the problems faced by communities with little resources, first concentrating on India.
Scholarships from Ratan Tata
The Cornell University Tata Scholarship
The $28 million Tata Scholarship Fund, established by the Tata Education and Development Trust, a charitable affiliate of the Tata Group, enables Cornell University to offer financial aid to Indian undergraduate students. The grantees of this annual award stay at Cornell University throughout the length of their undergraduate studies.
The recipient of the undergraduate scholarship must be an Indian citizen who completed secondary school in India, be accepted as an undergraduate at Cornell, and qualify for need-based financial help.
Qualified candidates accepted into the following programs are given preference during the Tata Scholarship selection process: College of Architecture, Art, and Planning; College of Engineering; Cornell SC Johnson College of Business degree in Applied Economics and Management; and majors in the social sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, and other sciences from other colleges.
Scholarships For Students Of Jammu And Kashmir
To encourage teaching as a career, Tata Trusts started a scholarship initiative in 2019 for DEd and BEd students in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir. These students will benefit from the two-year scholarship as they pursue education-related degree and diploma programs.
The Tata Trusts Students Biennale National Award was also introduced with the aim of identifying and assisting gifted student artists in realising their full potential.
Sir Ratan Tata Post-Doctoral Fellowship
In collaboration with the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) founded the Sir Ratan Tata Post-doctoral Fellowship in 1997. This fellowship, which is housed at the LSE India Observatory, lasts for six months every academic year.
It is anticipated that the Fellow will use this opportunity to present at a seminar organised by the India Observatory and complete a research paper of publishable quality while they are there. Before visiting LSE, the chosen candidate should have obtained all the information and materials needed for their study.
Applicants must be early career post-doctoral researchers specialising in South Asian social science in order to be eligible. The fellowship is not meant for senior academics or students enrolled in degree or diploma programs; candidates should have received their PhD. Candidates should also be employed permanently by a reputable organisation in the SAARC area, which consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
The J. N. Tata Endowment
Since its establishment in 1892 by Jamsetji Nusserwanjee Tata, this endowment has given loan scholarships to approximately 5700 Indian students from all around the country. Only Master’s, Ph.D., and post-doctoral fellowships in all fields of study abroad are supported by the Endowment, which is given out based on merit.
Candidates must pass an online exam and interview with subject-matter experts in order to be chosen. Candidates must be Indian, under 45 as of June 30 of that year, and graduates of an accredited Indian university with an average of at least 60% in their undergraduate or graduate coursework in order to be eligible. If a candidate’s undergraduate degree was not earned from an accredited Indian university, they are not allowed to apply.
Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust.
Indian women graduates of reputable universities who want to continue their education overseas are given scholarships by the Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust.
Applicants must have a continuously strong academic record and have applied to, or ideally been accepted into, reputable universities or institutes in the US, UK, or Europe in order to be eligible. It is preferred that graduates have at least two years of relevant paid job experience. On a specified day, shortlisted candidates must appear for an in-person or online interview with the board of trustees.
Depending on the candidate’s performance in the interview, the chosen student receives a gift scholarship for a portion of the tuition fee component, with an approximate value ranging from Rs 3 to Rs 6 lakh.
Candidates are not eligible to apply if they are enrolled in correspondence courses, exchange programs, undergraduate courses, distance learning, part-time, short-term courses, have not yet received their final bachelor’s degree marksheets, have already started their studies overseas, or are travelling to a country other than those listed above.
