175 Indians languish in UAE jails, SC chief justice Ramana wants speedy extradition
The extradition of 175 Indians from UAE has become a talking point between authorities of both the countries.
The matter has drawn the attention of Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana. He has asked authorities of countries to provide consular access to the large number of Indians lodged in the West Asian nation’s jails.
He expressed dismay over the fact that extradition proceedings have been pending for several years although India has an extradition treaty with the UAE.
Justice Ramana, who is visiting the UAE, held talks with his counterpart Mohd Hamad Al Badi, president of the country’s Federal Supreme Court, and law minister Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi about bilateral cooperation on judicial issues.
He said the extradition orders of 175 Indians are pending, adding the issue was brought to the notice by (Indian) ambassador in that country. Indian delegation talked to the UAE law minister and requested him to look into (this) and try to expedite the extradition orders.
Justice Ramana was speaking at his felicitation by the Indian diaspora, organised by the Indian Cultural and Social Centre in Abu Dhabi.
Justice Ramana said that during his interactions with his apex court counterpart and the UAE law minister, he also taken up the issue of consular access to Indian prisoners in that country. He also requested the Indian community in the UAE to provide legal support to expatriates who need it.
