In a vibrant display of culture and community spirit, the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) held a significant event on September 8th, marking the commencement of its Onam Celebrations, Sravanam 2024. In a vibrant display of culture and recognition, the Samajam DJ Hall hosted celebrations that showcased a variety of performances and honoured distinguished individuals. Among the notable attendees were Indian Parliamentarian Sri N K Premachandran and Kerala Legislative Assembly Member Mr. C.R. Mahesh.

The program commenced at 7:45 pm, featuring a mesmerising chenda melam performed by approximately 50 instrumentalists from the Sopanam Vadhyakala Sangham, under the direction of guru Santhosh Kailas. A remarkable Onam fusion dance performance choreographed by Jyothiraj captivated audiences, featuring the impressive talents of 30 female artists.

In a recent general meeting, BKS President P. V. Radhakrishna Pillai took the helm, while BKS General Secretary Varghese Karakkal delivered the welcome address. At the recent event, the prestigious BKS Business Icon Award was awarded to Mr. Rahim Bhava Kunju, the Managing Director of R. V. Trading Company, who is also recognised for his philanthropic efforts. The prestigious BKS Young Business Icon Award has been awarded to Ibrahim Aduham, recognising his outstanding contributions to the business community.

The Chief Guest, in his address, commended BKS’s Onam celebrations, highlighting their role in fostering religious harmony and unity among the community. The Bahraini Malayali expatriate community received commendation for their dedication to preserving cultural traditions, with a call for Keralite communities worldwide to take inspiration from their efforts. Premachandran commended BKS and its leaders, notably P. V. Radhakrishna Pillai, for their significant efforts in advancing Indian culture on the international stage. In a recent address, Kerala Legislative Assembly Member C. R. Mahesh commended the Bharat Kalyan Sangh (BKS) for its efforts in preserving the lively spirit of Onam celebrations, highlighting their significant contribution to promoting community unity. The evening wrapped up with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Varughese George, the General Convener of Sravanam 2024.

In the hours following the official function, the Onappudava costume competition unfolded, highlighting twelve teams as they presented Kerala-themed costumes. In a recent competition, Shrestha Bahrain emerged victorious, while Team Kevin and B.K.S. Literary Wing claimed the second and third spots, respectively. Bincy Roy, the convenor of the Onappudava competition, expressed her gratitude to all of the event’s supporters. Mementos were subsequently presented to the convenors and joint convenors who have spearheaded various competitions and programs as part of Sravanam 2024.

The Onam celebrations are set to continue at BKS, featuring a range of activities and programs, culminating on September 28th.
