Pulse Of A Community: Now, The Power Of The World

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK | May 2025

Dear Readers,

There is a powerful, unmistakable rhythm that beats across continents — in classrooms in New Jersey, in innovation hubs in Berlin, in bustling restaurants in Dubai, and in community gatherings in Melbourne. It is the heartbeat of the Indian diaspora — a vibrant, committed, and indomitable force that continues to shape the world, not just with its intellect, but with integrity, compassion, and courage.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her recent address to the Indian community in Milan, reaffirmed what we at The WFY have long believed: the Indian diaspora is a constructive and positive contributor to every economy it touches. This is more than a statement of pride — it is a global reality. Our presence is not merely statistical; it is transformational.

In Berlin and Paris, hundreds recently took to the streets in a resolute stand against terrorism, following the horrifying Pahalgam attack in Jammu & Kashmir. Their collective voices, echoing across the Brandenburg Gate and under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, reminded the world that Indians, even oceans away from home, will always rise in unity against hate and violence. These acts of solidarity — public, peaceful, and passionate — reveal the moral compass that guides our community.

Meanwhile, across Canada, tensions stir as geopolitical ripples affect the South Asian diaspora. Amid this, our people once again respond with strength — forming support networks, staying informed, and focusing on preserving harmony. It is this resilience that has defined us for generations and will continue to carry us forward.

And so, this May, as we welcome a new wave of global events and emotional stories, we present to you a carefully curated issue of The WFY that not only informs but also inspires.

From our Cover story on Usha Vance, the new Second Lady of the United States, exploring her Indian roots and emerging influence in American society, to deeply personal reflections and richly reported articles across disciplines — this issue is layered with depth and diversity.

Our World Politics section brings insight into key international developments — such as the US-Ukraine mineral pact — through the lens of Indian-origin experts.

In Health & Wellness, we decode migraines, offer practical heart-health advice, and explore how subtle dietary changes can ease chronic conditions like tinnitus and insomnia.

The Lifestyle segment continues to be a reader favourite — offering an immigrant’s guide to Canada, decoding modern relationship dynamics, and giving real-life solutions to everyday conflicts in love and marriage.

Our Featured pages highlight culinary treasures like Mutton Donne Biryani and pay cinematic tribute to master auteur Shaji N. Karun, whose legacy we continue to honour.

In Art & Culture, readers are invited into tender spaces through evocative prose and poetry — from Rema Pisharody’s Mother’s Touch to Kavya Patel’s thoughtful piece on Caravaggio’s art and poignant poems on love, memory, and longing.

The Economy & Business section tackles big ideas with relevance — from the rise of small language models as a smart choice for Indian businesses to wealth shifts within Asian families led by Indian financial dynasties.

We also bring guidance to your financial journey in the Finance & Legal section — including a deep dive into financial freedom and NRI investment portfolios.

In Science & Technology, we question the dominance of AI tools like ChatGPT and weigh alternatives for Indian users.

For the explorers among you, our Travel & Leisure section focuses on securing safe, enriching solo travel experiences — especially vital in today’s uncertain global landscape.

In Academics, we shortlist the world’s most rewarding MBA programs for ambitious diaspora youth looking to lead in global management.

Under Spirituality, we commemorate the 283rd birth anniversary of India’s first Archbishop, diving into a monumental legacy of service, faith, and impact.

And finally, in Sports, we spotlight Manprit — arguably the most formidable PIO footballer dominating the world stage today.

This issue truly spans every beat of life — politics, poetry, finance, food, science, and soul.

But none of this is possible without YOU — our global Indian family.

The WFY is more than a magazine; it’s a living document of the Indian spirit that spans geographies. As its Chief Editor, I invite you — our readers, writers, thinkers, and change makers — to become an even more integral part of this journey.

  1. Are you witnessing a remarkable diaspora story unfold in your city? Share it with us.
  2. Do you know an unsung hero, an artist, a student, a community worker, or a business innovator? Let the world know through The WFY.
  3. Can you contribute articles, perspectives, or reports? We are listening, and we are publishing.

Your voice, your experience, your ideas – they deserve a global stage.

We also humbly seek your support to sustain this independent platform. The WFY thrives on community strength. Whether it’s spreading the word, contributing content, or supporting us through partnerships, your involvement helps us document the extraordinary journeys of ordinary Indians worldwide.

As India steps firmly towards its 2047 vision of becoming a developed nation, as articulated by FM Sitharaman, the diaspora’s role becomes more crucial than ever. Let us be storytellers of change, witnesses to history, and guardians of our shared cultural legacy.

Here’s to the stories that bind us, the truths that uplift us, and the people who inspire us.

Warm regards,
Melwyn Williams
