Women’s History Month: Why do we celebrate it? Here’s everything you need to know.

Women are incredible beings. They are gifted with the ability to bring new life into the world and have shown remarkable strength and willpower throughout history. From fighting for their rights to leading countries and companies, women have come a long way. That’s why we celebrate them not just on one day but every day. March 8th is designated as International Women’s Day, and during the entire month of March, we observe Women’s History Month to celebrate and recognise the contributions women have made to society throughout history.

The National Women’s History Alliance selects a different theme for Women’s History Month every year. This year, the theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Stories.” It honours women, past and present, who have been engaged in all types of media and storytelling, including print, radio, TV, theatre, blogs, podcasts, news, and social media. The objective of this theme is to recognise the contributions of women in the field of media and storytelling and inspire future generations of women to follow their dreams.

Women’s History Month was officially declared in 1981 and has been celebrated every March since then. The idea for Women’s History Month was born out of Women’s History Week, which was established in 1978 by a school district in Sonoma, California. Former President Jimmy Carter turned this idea into a nationwide, weeklong vacation in 1980.

The significance of celebrating Women’s History Month lies in recognizing the contributions made by women to society throughout history. It is a month dedicated to teaching people about the significant sacrifices and contributions made by great women in the past and today. Women have played a crucial role in shaping society, and Women’s History Month is a time to honour them.

The colours that characterise Women’s History Month are purple, green, and white. These were also the colours of the Women’s Suffrage and Political Union. To contribute and give support to Women’s History Month, you can wear or decorate with these colors.
