Informative: The LAI has issued updated heart disease guidelines

On February 24: LAI had updated its guidelines on heart disease in Indians. The new guidelines incorporate new data on cardiovascular risk assessment and lipid management, according to the report.

Patients have been divided into risk groups under the new guidelines, according to Dr. Raman Puri, a cardiologist and LAI’s founder chairman.

According to the guidelines, people with metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) should aim for LDL cholesterol levels below 70 mg/dL.

Furthermore, a new category called ‘Extreme Risk Group Category C’ has been created for a small number of patients who continue to have chest pain despite all available treatments.
Dr. Vinod M. Vijan, an interventional cardiologist, recommends that individuals in this category have LDL cholesterol levels between 10 and 15 mg/dL.

According to Dr. Puri, lipid profile screenings should begin at the age of two in adopted children or families with elevated lipoprotein (a).

The new guidelines also recommend including lipoprotein (a) assessment in lipid profile tests for initial screening, as it is common in 25% of Indians.
