Late on Friday night, a tremendous dust storm tore through Delhi, with wind gusts as high as 77 km/h recorded in some regions, according to Met Department authorities. Some parts of the city also experienced light rain and hailstorms.
The storm caused extensive damage around the city; the Delhi Police got 60 calls regarding uprooted trees and 22 calls concerning parts of houses or walls collapsing between 9 and 11 p.m. Additionally, according to officials, the fire department received about 50 calls of this type.
The MCD and NDMC, two civic authorities, stated that complaints about temporary buildings or tree damage were still being received and compiled.
The number of people killed or injured as a result of the storm’s destruction was unclear at the time this article went to press; police officials stated that all information regarding casualties, if any, would be released at a later time.
At least nine aircraft were diverted to Jaipur, according to airport officials, as a result of the storm.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upped its earlier “yellow alert” for a dust storm and rain over the weekend to an orange alert at 8 p.m.
An orange alert is issued when exceptionally poor weather is predicted. The storm started about nine o’clock at night. According to IMD, the wind reached 77 kmph over Ujwa at ten o’clock, 63 kmph in Pragati Maidan, and 61 kmph at Lodhi Road.
“ Remain indoors, shut doors and windows, and try not to go anywhere. IMD issued an advisory, saying, “Take safe shelter; do not take shelter under trees.”“The dust storm occurred due to an interaction between mid-tropospheric southwestern and lower tropospheric easterlies,” stated IMD scientist Krishna Mishra.
With a high temperature of 39°C on Friday, Delhi’s maximum temperature stayed below 40°C for the third day in a row.
This is a slight variation from the previous day’s 38.8°C. Despite this, the minimum temperature remained above average at 27.7°C, up from 26°C on Thursday.
