Reflecting On The Past Year And Welcoming Better Days Ahead

From the Editor’s Desk: Reflecting on 2024 and Stepping into a Brighter Future

Dear Readers,

As we bid farewell to 2024, it is time to reflect on an eventful year, one that tested our resilience and celebrated our collective strength. From heartwarming tales of Indian communities flourishing abroad to critical issues that brought us together as a global family, this year has been a journey of learning, growth, and inspiration.

Our cover story, The Great Indian Migration: The Birds That Flew to the Corners of the World, highlights the indomitable spirit of Indians who have made homes across continents, carrying with them our values, culture, and heritage. Despite geographical boundaries, their stories reinforce one truth: home is where our roots are, and they are deep in our shared culture.

This year, however, brought challenges too. Financial scams, cyber frauds, and economic uncertainties have been persistent threats. Indians worldwide have faced unprecedented cybercrime targeting even the most prominent figures, such as S.P. Oswal. Such events remind us of the importance of vigilance and informed decision-making. In a world that often moves faster than our ability to adapt, staying grounded in values of caution and wisdom is essential.

On a brighter note, 2024 also witnessed inspiring progress. The “do good economy” has gained traction globally, with local social enterprises promoting inclusive growth. From Melbourne’s west to cities in the Americas, the wave of responsible capitalism is a hopeful sign that humanity is capable of balancing profit with purpose. As individuals, supporting these initiatives, even in small ways, contributes to creating a fairer and more equitable world.

This final issue of WFY encapsulates the richness of our experiences this year. From stories of historical milestones, like the 25th anniversary of the Kandahar hijack, to thought-provoking pieces such as Marriages and Cohabitation: The World of Ancient India Revisited, and creative highlights like Speaking Art Fest, we hope this edition informs, inspires, and uplifts you.

As the year closes, let us carry forward the lessons of 2024—of resilience, innovation, and shared growth—into 2025. Let’s remain vigilant in protecting ourselves from threats and open to embracing opportunities. As we celebrate our past achievements, let us not forget the incredible possibilities the future holds for all of us.

Thank you for your unwavering support, and here’s to stepping into a new year of hope, purpose, and joy.

Warm regards,

Melwyn Williams
